The following newspaper excerpt (dated 22.04.1943) describes why Streit received the Knight’s Cross…

“Hauptmann Werner Streit… and his Silesian Grenadier-Kompanie held their forward position (located south of Lake Ilmen) for weeks of heavy combat against almost unceasing attacks by powerful opposing forces. In this time, whenever the Bolsheviks managed to temporarily achieve a penetration, Hauptmann Streit would in turn successfully throw them back with the help of a few Grenadiers.”
