Biography

Robert Anthony Eden was a British Conservative politician, decorated soldier, and diplomat who served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1955 to 1957.

Eden rose quickly in politics, entering Parliament in 1923 and becoming Foreign Secretary at just 38. He resigned in 1938 in protest against Neville Chamberlain’s appeasement of Mussolini, which gave him a reputation for principle.

During the Second World War he returned as Foreign Secretary under Winston Churchill, playing a central role in Allied diplomacy, and held the post again in the early 1950s.

After years as Churchill’s deputy, Eden succeeded him as Prime Minister in 1955 and won a general election soon after. His premiership, however, was dominated by the Suez Crisis of 1956, when Britain, France, and Israel intervened militarily in Egypt. The lack of American support turned the operation into a political disaster, widely seen as marking the decline of Britain’s global influence.

Ill health and the fallout from Suez forced Eden to resign in January 1957. Though once admired as a skilled diplomat and Churchill’s natural heir, his reputation was overshadowed by Suez, and historians often rank him among the less successful twentieth‑century prime ministers.
