"On the night of 17/18 April 1945, Lt. Ryan was in command of a river patrol consisting of 2 canoes manned by hmslef and 3 O.R.'s, armed with 2 Vickers 'K'M.G.'s. His task was to patrol the river IRAWADDY in the area of CHAUK and to itercept nd destroy anemy craft encountered. About 03.00 hrs. he sighted a large pontoon crossing from the west bank to the east. The pontoon was carrying one 150 m.m. gun and upwards of 100 Japanese, and was about 80 yards away. Lt. Ryan closed to within 20 yds. with both guns firing and succeeded in setting one enemy craft in fire. He then circled round until nearly all his ammunition had been expended before turning away upstream. About 15 minuted later the pontoon blew up and sank. It was subsequently discovered that this was the last pontoon available to the enemy and as a result he was forced to abandon two 150 m.m. guns and one a/a gun on the west bank. Lt. Ryan displayed great coolness, courage and determination in pressing home his attack to point blank range and his inspiring leadership was a considerable factor in the success of the operation."
