Klaas Luitje Bakema was born on November 12th, 1912 as son to Guitje Bakema and Wimke Elizabeth Bakema-Pilon. He married Zwaantje Gezina Huizing on February 1st, 1939.

"Distinguished himself through courageous conduct against the enemy during the period from May 10 to 13, 1940, as Commander of two medical aid stations on the Grebbe Line front line near Kruiponder, acting in an exemplary and fearless manner under very difficult circumstances and enemy fire during the fighting for this section of the front line.
When it became necessary to move the aid stations further back, he calmly and tactfully managed this relocation under enemy fire and was the last to withdraw.
After being captured by the enemy on May 13, 1940, he continued to provide medical aid to wounded Dutch prisoners of war to the extent possible and despite enemy threats."
