Distinguished himself through courageous conduct against the enemy on May 10, 1940, as pilot of the seaplane "R2," forced by enemy fire to make a dangerous emergency landing on the northern bank of the Nieuwe Waterweg near Rozenburg Island. He continued the fight against the enemy after this emergency landing. In particular, when two enemy transport aircraft crewed by paratroopers landed there, under fire from paratroopers, he enabled the air gunner of the "R2" to set the "R2" ablaze, by covering him with his own fire.
