Citation:
"Distinguished himself by courageous conduct against the enemy on the afternoon of May 13, 1940, near Rhenen, under heavy enemy fire, as a volunteer, penetrating through the station there and then, accompanied only by one volunteer, into enemy-occupied territory east of the railway line. At close range, he used hand grenades to neutralize a group of six Germans firing machine guns from the rear. Afterwards, although wounded by fire from another enemy unit harassing him, he warned his own troops before withdrawing that the enemy had again approached within very close range."
