Citation:
"Distinguished himself by courageous conduct against the enemy on May 10, 1940, as commander of one of the rifle companies charged with the defense of Ypenburg airfield, by leading his company in an exemplary manner during its overrun by the enemy. In particular, as a result of the enemy bombardment of this airfield, several soldiers who found themselves in the barracks and hangars there, partly dressed, withdrew in a disorderly manner in the direction of his command post at the Hoorn Bridge, to hold out resolutely, to resupply them with clothing and weapons and to reassign them to his unit. Furthermore, by holding out at the Hoorn Bridge throughout the day, despite enemy attacks, including from the air, and by continuing to close off this access road to The Hague, so that the battalion that had been designated to relieve the airfield found this bridge in its own hands. Finally, after having requested permission to clear the airfield and its surroundings of any remaining enemy, he courageously participated in the lead group in the afternoon's capture of the enemy-occupied "Johanna Hoeve" near the airfield."
