"Distinguished himself by courageous conduct against the enemy in the early morning of May 10, 1940, while assigned as a light machine gunner to the occupation of casemate 58 in the defense of the Meuse River near Sambeek. After his sergeant-commander was wounded by a direct hit in the casemate, he escorted him to a rear command post, then returned to the casemate and continued to engage the enemy with his machine gun, inflicting significant losses on him until the machine gun was destroyed.
Furthermore, by continuing to defend the casemate to the utmost with his rifle until approximately two o'clock in the afternoon, still under heavy enemy fire."
