Citation:
"Distinguished himself by courageous conduct against the enemy, in the early morning of 10 May 1940, while assigned to the campaign charged with the defence of the railway and foot bridges at Venlo, by immediately assuming command of his company in the apparent absence of the company commander. After jumping these bridges, he effectively led his unit under heavy enemy artillery, mortar, and machine gun fire, and successfully continued to engage the enemy to the extent that all attempts to cross the river at Venlo failed."
