Period:
Second World War (1939-1945)
Rank:
Landstorm-sergeant
Awarded on:
October 11th, 1949
Citation:
"He distinguished himself with courage and prudence by escaping on 11 April 1945 in Siam during a transport of Dutch prisoners of war under Japanese guard, after which he joined the underground resistance movement in Siam. By dangerously establishing contact with several underground resistance fighters while working outside the Thung Son prison camp (South Siam), he was able to prepare and execute his escape with great skill. He performed very useful work for the Siamese underground movement, as well as for the British paratroopers who had landed in Siam, in the preparatory measures for an Allied invasion and a general uprising against the Japanese occupation forces, which were planned for August 1945. As a result of Japan's sudden capitulation, the uprising did not take place.
Reported to the Dutch commander of former prisoners of war in Bangkok at the beginning of September 1945 for further assignment. Due to his special status and merits, he was one of the first to be sent to Java in October of that year."
