"This officer, as 2 i/c No. 2 Railway Operating Group, Royal Engineers, was formerly responsible for the operating side of the rail Ls of C ROME - EREZZO and ORTE - ANCONA; from April 1945 onwards, after his appointment as A.D.Tn., he had the added responsibility, as chief operating assistant to the Deputy-Director of Transportation (Railway), of organising and supervising both the L of C from ROME to ANCONA and also the main L of C forward to FAENZA, on which the success of the Spring advance of Eighth Army depended.

Lt Col Suddaby has throughout shown outstanding ability and resource in overcoming technical difficulties, and his energy and enthusiasm have contributed largely to the success of railway operating during this critical period."

"Lieutenant Colonel William A. Suddaby, Royal Engineers, Transportation (British) Allied Force Headquarters, displayed meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services in Italy from October 1943 to April 1945. As Commanding Officer 192d Railway Operating Company, Royal Engineers, the arrived at Salerno on 2 October 1942 and was assigned the difficult task of rehabilitating rail lines from Agropoli to Salerno to Naples. Realizing the gravity of the situation, he worked tirelessly directing inexhaustible interest and energy towards bringing these lines to completion by 25 November 1943. On 30 December 1943 he became second in command of the 2nd Railway Operating Group, Royal Engineers. This unit was given responsibility of rehabilitating railway lines from Foggia to Ortona. Due in large measure to the resourcefulness, sound judgement and energetic action displayed in record time. On 15 March 1945, he was assigned as Assistant Director Transportation Railways. In this assignment he inspired confidence, loyalty and respect in the American and British Forces with which he was associated thereby greatly increasing the effectiveness of rail operations in Italy. The outstanding service performed by Lieutenant Colonel Suddaby reflects great credit upon himself and the Royal Engineers of the British Army."
