Biography

Frank Bigelow was initially a member of the crew of the submarine tender U.S.S. Canopus (AS-9). However, this ship was severely damaged on 29 December 1941 and subsequently scuttled. Its crew joined the ground forces in Bataan and eventually fled to Corregidor for a last stand against the Japanese onslaught.

Bigelow and Havey and Coxwain Havey defended the beach area, manning a twin .50-caliber machine gun. Havey was hit and tried to reach Malinta Tunnel while Bigelow remained at his post. Havey was killed by seven machine gun bullets across the chest moments later.
