Thomas was born on November 14 1917 in Toronto, the son of Dickson Drummond How and Grace Ritchie How nee Johnston of Montreal. His sisters were Mrs. Margaret Berrien Rize and Mrs. Joan Von Bolderts.

He was a bank clerk and member of the Anglican Church. He spoke English and a little French and his sports were squash, tennis, hockey, cricket and rugby and his hobbies were woodwork and fishing.

He enlisted first in April 1940 The Royal Naval Canadian Volunteer Reserve as a sub lieutenant but failed the final examination in August 1941. He enlisted afterwards the RCAF on September July 18 1941 in Montreal and he went thereafter on July 30 1942 overseas to the UK.

Thomas was killed in action on Friday May 14 1943 age 25 due to a crash at the Vreelandseweg near Nederhorst den Berg before or after an attack on Bochum in Germany. His other fallen RCAF crew members were F/Sgt Joseph P. Ethier age 24 in grave 13-6-123, F/Sgt Albert F. Hopley age 20 in grave 13-6-122 and F/Sgt James A. Thomson age 20 in grave 13-6- 121. The fallen RAF Volunteer Reserve crew member was Sgt Norman Hudspith age 22 in grave 13-6-120.

A monument for the 5 fallen crew members was unveiled in September 2019 by family members in Nederhorst den Berg, Holland.

He served with the 426 Sqdn Royal Canadian Air Force.
