Biography

RIchard Broome was a British officer who served with Special Operations Executive in Malaya, 1942; escaped from Malaya to Ceylon, 1942; served with Force 136, Special Operations Executive in India, Ceylon and Malaya, 1942-1945; Worked for British Military Administration and Foreign Office Malaya and Singapore 1945-1958

"Major Broome was landed by submarine on the coast of MALAYA on 12 Sep. 43 and proceeded inland through enemy-occupied territory. From that date until 1 Feb 45 no contact was made with the party of which he was second-in-command. On 1 Feb 45 W/T contact was made with the party. From signals received it is clear that the party has been highly successful in achieving its objective, which was contact and co-operation with the resistance moevement in MALAYA. Reports from the field show that Major Broome has played an exceedingly important part in the successful negotiations with the resistance movement Leaders. He has spent seventeen months in enemy occupied territory during which time his life has been constantly in the gravest danger. In spite of this danger and the severe strain of life under the most difficult conditions, his morale has been of the highest order and he has displayed tenacity of purpose and unfailing cheerfulness."
