Leendert van Kempen was a former professional soldier and member of the resistance in and around Werkendam. Not much is known about him. In the fall of 1944 he became involved in the plan to obtain weapons by raiding and disarming German soldiers passing through the edge of the Biesbosch. They were held captive in a few arks hidden in the Biesbosch and on 6-11-1944 a total of 75 captured Germans in liberated Drimmelen were handed over to the Polish army.

In the following months he made 10 crossings into liberated territory as a Line Crosser. During these so-called crossings right through the front line people and intelligence were transferred in rowboats and canoes. On the way back they brought back weapons, medicine and food.
