    "Distinguished himself by courageous conduct against the enemy during the period of October 6 to 9, 1944, during heavy fighting by the 1st Battalion, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, against superior enemy forces, by making frequent forays under heavy all-arms fire to supply his battalion with the necessary ammunition and to evacuate wounded men on the return journey. Furthermore, when other means failed, he succeeded in clearing a route for armored vehicles and ambulances."
