Second World War (1939-1945)
Rank:
Soldaat Infanterie (Private Infantry)
Unit:
Ve Bataljon Infanterie (Inf. V), Koninklijk Nederlandsch-Indisch Leger
Awarded on:
October 11th, 1949
Citation:
"Distinguished himself by courageous and persevering action against the enemy.
Jonker was assigned as a soldier to a unit of the first company of the Ve Infantry Battalion, which fought in the front line on March 6, 1942, in the Tjiater Line (West Java). After repelling several Japanese attacks, it held firm until it was completely surrounded by the enemy and forced to surrender.
The entire unit was subsequently brutally murdered by the Japanese. After having been tied together in groups with their own leg wraps, they were killed by machine gun fire and bayonet stabs.
Although seriously wounded, Jonker managed to break free and also rescue a wounded comrade.
Despite his injuries, he attempted to reach his own troops, wandering for several days under extremely difficult circumstances and suffering great hardship, until he was finally captured by a Japanese patrol."
