Biography

Sir David Petrie (1879–1961) was a Scottish police officer and intelligence chief who played a significant role in British security during the Second World War. He joined the Indian Imperial Police in 1900, rising through the ranks, knighted in 1929 and eventually becoming Chairman of the Indian Public Service Commission in 1936.

During World War I, Sir David Petrie served in the Indian Imperial Police, where he was involved in intelligence and security operations in British India. His work focused on counter-espionage and law enforcement, ensuring stability in the region during the war.

His experience in intelligence and administration led to his appointment as Director General of MI5 in 1941. During his tenure, he restructured MI5, improving its efficiency in counter-espionage and security operations during the war. He retired in 1946, leaving behind a modernized intelligence service that continued to shape British security efforts.
