Remains St. James Episcopal Church

This church was located in the middle of the Battle of Brandy Station.
The Battle of Brandy Station (Battle of Fleetwood Hill), on 9 June 1863, was the largest cavalery-battle in the American Civil War. On the Union side, 69 men were killed, 352 wounded and 486 missing/captured. The Confederates lost 523 men.
In December 1863, the St. James Episcopal Church was was dismantled by soldiers for bricks and lumber to build the winter huts. The church was totally destroyed. The adjacent cemetery is said to hold 60 graves. Although there are only two inscribed tombstones, one to an unknown Confederate soldier.
