Monument to the Fallen for Spain

This memorial (Monumento a los Caídos por España), also known as the "Obelisco", commemorates the victims of the uprising on 2 May 1808 (Dos de Mayo) in Madrid against the French occupation. After the uprising, numerous Spaniards were executed here by the French.
It is also the national memorial for all Spaniards who were killed in war and also contains the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
