Remains Grant’s Canal

This channel was dug by the 9th Regiment Connecticut Volunteers in June 1862, in an attempt to cut off a loop of the Mississippi river and so avoid the Confederate batteries at Vicksburg.
This part of the canal is now a part of the Vicksburg National Military Park.
