M4A4 Sherman Tank Mopertingen

This Sherman M4A4 stands next to the liberation monument in Mopertingen.

After the war, this tank served as a target for the Belgian army at the Brasschaat shooting range. It is therefore not surprising that the tank shows many small-caliber bullet holes. In 2003, after it had been completely refurbished, it was placed here as a permanent reminder of the liberation of Mopertingen.

The tank has been repainted and bears the vehicle markings of the 2nd Armored Division “Hell on Wheels,” 67th Regiment, vehicle of Platoon D number 7.

The tank is also equipped with a number of original-looking parts, such as the two .30 machine guns and periscopes. However, these are all replicas.

According to the capital letter G in an octagon on the transmission armor ‘D50998 LO G’, this tank was manufactured at the American Steel Foundries Granite City Works in Illinois. The letters LO stand for a specific heat treatment of this armor during the production proces.
