Royal Regiment of Artillery Memorials, St Georges Garrison Church

This memorial within the ruins of St George's Garrison Church commemorates the VC Winners of the in Royal Artillery and Indian Artillery, who were awarded a.o. in the Crimean War (1853-1856), the Boer War and the First and Second World War..

Within the ruins of St Georges Garrison Church are some of the original memorials to the campaigns that the Royal Regiment of Artillery fought in after the church was built in 1863 up until its destruction by V1 bomb on 13th July 1944.

"THE ORIGINALS OF THESE WINDOWS WERE DESTROYED ON 16 FEBRUARY 1918/ THE PRESENT WINDOWS WERE UNVEILED ON 2 MARCH 1919/ TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN COMMEMORATION OF THE SERVICES OF THEIR CORPS DURING THE GREAT WARS WITH FRANCE FROM 1808 TO 1815/ AND WITH RUSSIA IN 1854 & 1855 THESE WINDOWS HAVE BEEN DEDICATED BY THE OFFICERS OF THE ROYAL ARTILLERY."

In what is now the memorial garden are plaques to those that have died in conflicts since WW2 including Alan Horsley, a civilian, killed in the IRA bombing of the Kings Arms pub on 7 Nov 1974.
