Cambridge Barracks Woolwich

The Woolwich Division of the Royal Marines was established in 1805 with the threat of French Invasion. The barracks in Frances Street were established in 1808 and rebuilt in 1848. When the Royal Dockyard closed and the Woolwich Division Royal Marines disbanded in 1869 the Royal Marine Barracks were renamed Cambridge Barracks and handed over to the British Army. The barracks were named after Prince George, Duke of Cambridge who was Commander in Chief of the Forces.
In 1972 the barracks closed and was demolished with the exception of the gatehouse.
