This railway was constructed by the Germans in December 1914, to have a connection between Germany and Antwerp, Belgium.
The railroad was built so that it did not cross a road anywhere so that train traffic could not be held up anywhere. Transportation to the front was vital for the German army. Hence, many viaducts were built to prevent road crossings. Every few hundred meters there is a guard post section along the route of the viaducts. See photo 4.
The railroad and viaducts were built in part by Russian forced laborers captured on the Eastern Front.
