Camp Cemetery NKVD Camp No. 2

Up and around the Buchenwald Memorial Area it is possible to see many Memorials, exhibitions and remnants of Buchenwald Concentration Camp.

In the wooded area behind the camp is the cemetery for prisoners of Soviet Russian Special Camp No. 2. Immediately after the war until 1950, thousands of former Nazis, but above all opponents of the communist regime, were imprisoned here by the Russians under appalling conditions. It is estimated that more than 7,000 of them are buried here in mass graves.

In front of the cross lies a concrete plate with the inscription:
“Die Toten des Sovjetrussischen Speziaal Lager no 2 1945-1950” (The Dead of Soviet Russian Special Camp No. 2 1945-1950)

During the GDR period, this was not talked about. After 1990, the forest was turned into a cemetery with a memorial in the form of a large wooden cross, and stainless steel markers were placed at the recovered graves.
