Memorial Bombardment Peabody Estate

This memorial commemorates 78 people: residents, visitors and people on the street, who were killed on 8 September 1940 when a bomb dropped by the German Luftwaffe hit the building of the Peabody Estate.

The Peabody trust was founded in 1862 by American banker George Peabody who had developed an affection for London and wanted to improve living conditions in some of the poorer areas of London. By 1939 the Trust owned more than 8,000 buildings across London. The Trust also built air raid shelters on the estates and it was one of these shelters that took a direct hit on 8th September 1940.
In total, two hundred Peabody residents and three members of staff were killed during WW2.
