War Memorial Prussia Hauptfriedhof

The German war memorial stands on a mass grave, created in 1873, for the 170 soldiers of Mainz who died in the War of 1870/1871. On the sides of the pedestal are cast in bronze panels the rank, surname and regiment of the deceased. On the front bronze panel is the inscription: "From captured cannons given by emperor Wilhelm, the citizens and the garrison erected this memorial to the warriors who had died in Mainz as a result of the campaign".The bronze lion was made from captured French guns and is a direct copy of the Lying Lion from the grave of General Gerhard von Scharnhorst in the Invalidenfriedhof in Berlin.
