Hessian War Memorial Hauptfriedhof

The Hessian war memorial was unveiled in 1882 by the Veterans' Association Siegeskrnaz. The monument consists of an obelisk atop a tall plinth base, decorated with a black marble statuette of an eagle on each of the four sides, It is dedicated to 14 Mainz soldiers who died in the war of 1870/71. Their name, rank, date of birth and date of death are inscribed on the white marble panel, with letters highlighted in black paint, On a black marble band are listed the battles in which the Hessian division was involved. Additional panels were added to the main body of the memorial and at the base for members of the division who died in later years up to 1904.
