War Memorial Heemsen

WW1 part
The monument stands in front of the main door of St Michaels’ Church, Heemsen. A tall pedestal is topped with a stone Iron Cross below which is the face and wings of an angel. The names (12 on the north and 12 on the south sides ) are given along with their date of birth and date of death, The names are arranged in order of their death. The front (west) side contains the dedication: Dedicated to the fallen sons of Heemsen in the World War 1914-1918.

On the back (east) side is the inscription: ‘Wherever you sleep in Gods will, the bloody seed of future harvests are never forgotten in the German land. Rest in peace in God’s hand’.

WW2 part
A horse-shoe of low stone boulders has been placed around the WW1 Memorial. The 41 boulders are inscribed with 53 names and one boulder carries a cross and the words ‘To our distant dead’. Each name is also given the date of birth and the date of death for the man commemorated.
