Rigel Memorial

Tjøtta war cemetery contains this memorial, which commemorates the sinking of the Rigel. Most of the people on board were Russian POWs. On 27 November 1944, the ship was sunk by Allied aircraft and 2,457 people perished. The victims who were washed ashore are buried in this cemetery.

In memory of Norwegian, Soviet and German citizens who lost their lives on the 27th of November 1944 when the prisoner transport ship ‘Rigel’ was sunk and who lies buried here.
