Russian Cannon Maidstone

This Russian gun is a trophy from the Crimean War.

"Remembrance Square
'Lest We Forget'
I have many times asked myself
whether there can be more potent
advocates of peace on earth
through years to come than this
massive multitude of silent
witnesses to the desolation of war
George V."

"This cannon captured at Sebastopol was presented to Maidstone by Lord Panmure, Secretary of War, George Wickham Mayor 1958"

Over 4,000 pieces of ordnance were captured at the Fall of Sevastopol in September 1855 and shared amongst the victorious French and British forces. Many were brought back to Britain and gifted to towns and cities. Although many were scrapped during WW2, some 66 remain in Britain and 35 ]in Canada, Australia and Gibraltar.
