Bust of Koos de la Rey

This memorial in the gardens of the Zuid-Afrikaans Hospitaal (ZA Hospital) commemorates Jacobus Herculaas de la Rey (1847-1914), better known as Koos de la Rey. During the First Boer War (1880-1881) he was field cornet (Boer leader) and he took over the command of the Potchefstroom siege from Piet Conjé, when Cronjé fell ill. In the Anglo-Boer War (1899-1902) he served as general. Besides that, he also had a political career.
