Rene Bardy was a resident of Les Sables d'Olonne, on the outbreak of the war he was a Lieutenant in the French air force. After the capitulation of France, Rene joined the French Resistance. Rene led a group of resistance fighters, distributed leaflets and underground newspapers and had regular contact with the Allies through Morse.
During a major Gestapo raid on August 12th 1943 to crush the resistance, the home of Rene Bardy was completely ransacked by the Gestapo.
The bulk of the resistance fighters from the group of Rene Bardy was arrested during the raid that in the same time took place in various places in the area. The resistance across the region suffered large losses during this raid, there were many people arrested and lots of weapons were found by the Gestapo.

Rene Bardy was imprisoned in the prison of Pierre-Levée at Poitiers, on January 22nd 1944 he was deported to Buchenwald.
Rene Bardy got sick in Buchenwald after a few weeks he was 54 years old when he succumbed to his illness. He was cremated at the crematorium in Buchenwald.

On June 5th 1944 he was appointed "capitaine à titre posthumous" (posthumous Captain) from August 1th 1943. Also in 1945 he received the 'médaille de la Résistance' (Medal of the Resistance).
