Liberation Route Location 1 - The German Retreat

In the shadow of Operation Market Garden, the airborne operation that turned out to be a bridge too far, Nederweert lay in the operating area of the British 8th Corps. Nederweert was liberated on September 22, 1944 by scouts from the 3rd British Infantry Division. They entered Nederweert via the Booldersdijk and over Strateris. German units withdrew and set up a new front along the Noordervaart canal and the Wessem-Nederweert canal. The front stabilized and Nederweert became the new front line.
