Memorials War Victims Boncelles

Commemorative plaques on the front of the city hall of Boncelles to remember the military and the civilian victims of the First and the Second World War.

Commemorated are the fallen of the 1st World War:

Killed in or died of wounds during the war

BEAUJEAN Gilles-Jean-Joseph, age 24, from Boncelles, soldier of the 4th line regiment, killed in action at Halen on 12 August 1914

CORNET Leonard-Toussaint-Felix, age 32, from Boncelles, sentry in the artillery of the garrison of Fort Lantin (Artillerie de Fortresse de Liège, AFL), died of pneumonia at Sart-Tilman on August 7, 1914 (On the heights and in the forests of Sart-Tilman, from August 5 to 7, a fierce fight raged between the German Army and the Belgians, forcing the Germans to (temporarily) retreat on August 7).

JACQUET Leon-Henri-Leonard, age 21, from Boncelles, soldier in the 11th Line Regiment, killed at Tisselt on Sept. 11, 1914.

KILESSE Jean-Emille-Joseph, age 32, from Boncelles, soldier with the 14th line regiment, died at Ougrée from wounds received on August 5/6, 1914 during the fierce fighting in the Bois St. Jean of Sart-Tilman near Liège.

MATHIEU Julien-Desire-Joseph, age 33, from Boncelles, soldier in the artillerie de forteresse d'Anvers (A.F.A.) Fort Walem, killed at Fort Walem on September 29, 1914, one day before his 34th birthday.


Died of injuries after the war

HUSQUINET Julien-Hubert, age 31, from Boncelles, soldier with Corps des Transport Division Armée, died at Boncelles on March 4, 1919 from wounds received at the front.

ROMPFF Albert-Joseph, age 33, from Heure-le-Romain, soldier with the 1st Line Regiment, died as a result of illness on September 30, 1918 at Nice (France).


Also on August 6, 1914, four civilians were shot by the German army and no fewer than 32 houses were set on fire.

DAMOISEAU Felicien Henri Joseph, age 26, factory worker, shot while on his way home from work.

DEBATTY Alphonse Herni, no details known.

DONNAY Alfred Jules, no details known.

LEROY François Joseph, no details known.
