War Memorial Gronau

In Gronau, near the center, there is a monument in memory of those who died during the Prussian-Austrian "Brother War" of 1866 and the German-French War of 1870.

The concrete monument is richly decorated with eagles on the corners of the 2nd plinth, an engraving of the bust of the German Kaiser Wilhelm 1. Furthermore, a figure of woman with banner, shield and laurel wreath adorns the top.

The inscriptions read;
Front under engraving;
"The citizens of the municipality of Gronau
their sons gloriously fallen in the struggle for emperor and country."

Below that;
"The Dead in Memory"
the living as a warning"

Right side:
"Praise and honor the highest good,
Freedom, Glory and Peace for the Fatherland.
Thanks to the fallen fighters."

Back:
"They died a hero's death for the fatherland;
1866
1870/71"

Left:
"Thank you, brave warriors
You who, after bloody battles, as uncrowned winners, have created the unity of the realm."
