Memorial "Schwarzer Garten" Nordhorn

In 1929, the Nordhorner Monument (as it was then known) was erected here:
• for the fallen of the Franco-Prussian War 1870/71 and
• for the victims of the First World War 1914-1918.
The design of the monument breathes the zeitgeist.

The fallen soldiers of the First World War are engraved in stone blocks with their names and ranks. In the lower part of the complex is a large number of copper plates with the names of the people who died in World War II.

Well-known artist Jenny Holzer has made a redesign. It reflected the concentric circles of the World War I memorial in a system of flowerbeds and pathways in the form of a "visor" or a circle with a cross. The whole was planted with black-leaved and black-flowering plants, provided with five sandstone benches, with inscriptions. In 1995 the city council decided to permanently rename the complex to "Schwarzer Garten" or black garden.
