Nisei War Memorial

The Nisei Monument commemorates the more than 14,000 Japanese Americans who fought for America in World War II. The majority fought in the 442nd Infantry Regiment, which is the most decorated unit in the United States Army. There were 21 soldiers who were awarded the Medal of Honor and the unit was also nicknamed the Purple Heart regiment.

They received more than 4000 Purple Hearts and 4000 bronze stars, 8 Presidential Unit Citations, a Congressional Gold Medal, as well as all surviving members became knights of the order of Légion d'Honneur for the relief of the 'Lost Battalion' in the Vosges on 24 October 1944. They were also named 'Honorary Texans'.

The regiment was part of the 34th Infantry Division and fought in Italy, France and Germany.
