Cemetery Soviet Soldiers World War II Ukmergé

Cemetery Soviet soldiers World War II Ukmergé

In the Pašilė district of the city of Ukmergé, there is a large cemetery for Soviet soldiers who fell here in the region during the Second World War. As usual, no individual graves are marked, but the names of all the fallen are listed in alphabetical order on the well-known red marble panels. There are countless of these panels, a considerable part of which is unfortunately barely legible. The entire cemetery gives the impression that it could use some maintenance or cleaning. Overlooking the grounds, where a total of more than 1000 Soviet soldiers are buried, stands the statue of the Soviet soldier with flowers in his hand. In front of the statue is a panel stating that 180 unknown soldiers are also buried here, there is a Hero of the Soviet Union and two panels stating that the fallen were mainly part of the 39th Soviet Army. The eternal flame before the image of the soldier seems to have been extinguished quite some time ago.
