Memorial Meeting Center "De Verre"

In September 1944 the area around Beveren was liberated.
On Monday 11 September, the Canadians had lined up at the Zandbaan from where they fired on the German SS. The bridge over the Watergang was blown up by the Germans on the night of September 10. A miss by the Canadians to take out the lookout in the church tower of Verrebroek hit the town hall and the school.
A memorial plaque in "De Verre" recalls the heavy damage to the then municipal school.
The old municipal school is now a meeting center "De Verre".
There is also a section for the police and municipal services.
The memorial plaque hangs in this part in the former entrance:
"On Sept. 1944 heavily damaged by shelling.
Rebuilt: 1953"
