Memorial Major Dr. Wilhelm Baumann and Abbe Launay

The Eberner physician Wilhelm Baumann served as a doctor in the German Wehrmacht. After the Allied landings in Normandy, the Battle of Falaise-Chambois took place in August 1944. Baumann has witnessed the nonsensical death of thousands of soldiers up close. Together with the French Abbé Launay, he facilitated the surrender of part of the German troops on 21 August 1944.

There is a memorial plaque to these two people on this spot. There is also a bust of Abbé Launay here.
