Memorial Lt. Col. Robert Wolverton

Robert Lee Wolverton was commander of the 3rd Battalion – 506 PIR – 101 Airborne on 06/06/1944. He remains famous for his haunting speech to his men before the departure for Normandy.
During the drop, his parachute got caught on an apple tree and he was defenseless when the Germans opened machine gun fire on him. He died on the spot.
This memorial also pays tribute to the men of the 3rd Battalion - 506 PIR who suffered the greatest losses of the 101 Airborne in this operation. 93 killed and 75 captured on 575 paratroopers.
The monument was inaugurated on June 9, 2014.
