North Island Naval Air Station

The history of North Island Naval Air Station dates back to World War I, when an air flying camp was purchased by the military. The airfield was then used to train (mainly naval) pilots. During World War II, it served as the main naval base in the San Diego Area. In 1955 U.S. Naval Air Station San Diego was renamed North Island Naval Air Station and is still operational.
