War Memorial Opera House

The War Memorial Opera House was built in 1932 as a war memorial for the Americans who served in the First World War. In the spring of 1945, the United Nations hosted its San Francisco Conference (UN Conference on International Organizations), which held a meeting there for the first time. The UN Charter was later drafted and signed at the Herbst Theater next door. Six years later, in 1951, the Treaty of San Francisco declaring peace with Japan was drafted and signed here and at the Herbst Theater. The opera house is part of the San Francisco War Memorial and Performing Arts Center.
