Memorial Raid Middelstum

Attack and reprisal, 1944

After a raid on April 25, 1944, 31 young men from Middelstum, aged 17 to 26, were taken as hostages from this place (then called Hotel Van Lacum) to "camp Amersfoort". From there they were transported by train to labor camps near Leipzig in Germany. Of the 31 captured men from Middelstum, 4 died in the labor camps as a result of illness, malnutrition or exhaustion.
