Monument War Victims Vise

This memorial commemorates two residents of Vise who fell on the eve of the liberation of the city on September 11, 44.

In their enthousiasm to lead the American liberators to their town, they were shot by a German sniper.

DEBEFVE Guillaume, age 22, (born and living in Visé).

A soldier, he managed to escape from occupied Belgium and rejoined the Belgian army in England in June 1942. He was a soldier (Piron Brigade, 1st infantrybrigade) at the liberation of Brussels on September 2nd. He was given a few days' leave on September 6th and decided to visit his family in Visé. However Visé is then still in German hands. Although the Americans are already almost in the village. Together with Michel Flohimont, he decides to accompany the American troops to Visé. There he was shot by a German sniper.

Michel Flohimont was with the resistance 'Front de l'Indépence, F.I., and is buried at the field of honour 1940-45 at the Lorette cemetery at Visé. See photo 3-5.

On the grave the date of death is Semptember 12th 1944. On the monument de date is September 11th 1944. The differance between these dates can probably be explained by the day they were shot by the sniper and the date they died of their wounds/ ore date the docter declared the victim diseased.
