Maczek Memorial Breda

he Maczek Memorial Breda opened in 2020 at the Polish military field of honour which was already located here. The museum building houses a permanent, multimedia exhibition on the liberation of Breda in October 1944 by the 1st Polish Armoured Division led by General Stanislaw Maczek. On the outside wall, an iconic photograph taken during the liberation of the city is depicted in large format. It shows a Polish soldier on a motorbike with a girl from Breda on the back.

A film room provides an introduction to Polish history and the Polish contribution to World War II. The permanent exhibition contains several listening points with accompanying exhibits, such as General Maczek's uniform and a motorbike of the 1st Polish Armoured Division. A wall-filling display case includes uniforms, weapons and souvenirs of the liberation of Breda made by soldiers. On an interactive wall showing the map of Europe, locations, photos and routes taken by Polish liberators are projected while visitors can listen to their stories with headphones. All audio clips and texts are available in Dutch, Polish and English.


The building also houses a reflection room where biographical details of the Poles buried at the field of honour are displayed one by one on a screen.An information and documentation centre and a small shop with books and souvenirs are also housed in the building.Museum volunteers give guided tours in the museum and at the field of honour on request.
