Memorial Max Manus

Monument

Maximo Guillermo "Max" Manus DSO, MC & Bar (9 December 1914 - 20 September 1996)
Manus returned to Scandinavia shortly before the outbreak of WW2, where he joined the Norwegian Army and fought as a volunteer for the Finns against the Soviets. He returned to Norway after the German Invasion on 9 April 1940 and fought in the Norwegian Campaign. He returned to Oslo and worked underground, manufacturing weapons, illegal public propaganda and organising resistance movements. He was captured by the Gestapo but managed to escape into Sweden and travelled back to Europe via Soviet Union, Turkey, Arabia, South Africa and the U.S. He rejoined the Norwegian Military and was trained as a saboteur before returning to Norway. He was responsible for many acts of sabotage, but whilst many of his comrades in arms were killed, captured and tortured, he managed to survive through a combination of determination and luck, with some very narrow escapes.
At the end of the war he was assigned as personal protection to King Haakon VII and Crown Prince Olav.
