Memorial

Norwegian Air Force 1940-1945

"To the memory of Air Force fallen 1940-1945"

8 plaques around the base of the granite memorial detail the names of Norwegian airmen who died in the battle for Norway and service in Allied air forces during World War 2, 1940-1945, particularly No 330, 331, 332, 333, 334 & 337 RAF.

The inscription on the rear face is by Norwegian poet, journalist and political activist Nordahl Grieg. Grieg was a staunch anti-Nazi and Norwegian patriot who joined the army and fought during the Norway campaign. He escaped to Britain on the same ship that carried the Norwegian Royal Family and the National Gold reserves.
In Britain he became a war correspondent visiting and reporting on Norwegian units.
On the night of 2-3 December 1943 Greig joined a Lancaster of 460 squadron RAAF on a bombing raid to Berlin. The aircraft was shot down with the loss of all onboard.
